Delicious, nutritious and energizing, chocolate smoothies seem to be all the rage right now. No wonder, they are a glass of creamy delight. Cocoa powder is a nutritious food and even though it is high in saturated fat, the fat helps make this more filling and even saturated fat has benefits for the body, if consumed in moderation. This smoothie is satisfying to the sweet tooth as well as filling enough for a breakfast or lunch. I recommend drinking it directly after a good workout.
Here is my version of a chocolate smoothie.
Chocolate Banana Green Smoothie
8 oz. coconut milk or almond milk
½ tsp vanilla extract
*1 Tbsp chia seeds (if you have them – they can add to the creamy texture of the smoothie)
1 yellow banana, not too ripe and not bruised
1 Tbsp honey
2 cups spinach This would not be as good with large stems. Baby spinach works best.
1 Tbsp cocoa powder
Optional: If you prefer it cold, add 1 cup of ice or coconut or almond milk ice cubes. Ice made from coconut milk or almond milk will add to the flavor, but ice from water will dilute it somewhat. I try to keep a bag of coconut milk ice cubes in the freezer. Frozen banana slices would also be good.
Add milk, vanilla, chia seeds and banana to the blender. Pulse the blender for a second or two to mix the chia in with the liquid. Let sit for five minutes to allow the chia to gel. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!
