Purple Soother Shake

Purple Soother Shake (34)

By Cynthia DeWitte

The Purple Soother Shake recipe might soothe your troubles if you are not feeling great and need a healthy pick-me-up.

I love blueberries and cocoa. When I made this, I wasn’t feeling very well, but after drinking the whole thing, I felt soothed and refreshed – thus the name. Smoothies are a terrific choice for any day, but especially when you want something easy to drink and fill you up that contributes to your health and well-being. This smoothie does that and it tastes delicious as well.

There are several advantages to using coco powder in a smoothie. The fat in the coco powder helps to properly digest and absorb the fat soluble nutrients in the vegetables, thus making it much more nutritious than it would be without the fat. Coco is known to as a mood improver. Most people love the flavor of chocolate! It is not overpowering in this smoothie, but blends nicely with the blueberries.

Purple Soother Shake

16 oz. almond/coconut milk (either almond or coconut milk alone is fine if you don’t have the combo)

1 Tbsp coco powder

1 Tbsp chia seeds

1 medium banana

1 ½ cups baby kale, divided

1 Tbsp honey

8 oz. frozen blueberries

Add milk, coco powder, chia seeds, banana and half of the kale. Add honey, then the other half of the kale. Blueberries go on top. Blend until smooth. If using a regular blender, add everything before the blueberries and blend. Add blueberries to blended shake and blend again until smooth. Make sure you add the honey in between the layers of kale, so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the blender or freeze with the blueberries. This way it will incorporate well into the shake. Even though the banana makes this shake sweet, the addition of honey is needed with the cocoa powder.

Baby kale is a lot different than regular kale. It has a milder flavor and is more tender than regular kale. If you can’t find baby kale, use spinach.
